Flagstaff, Arizona is a unique place. When one thinks of Arizona, they don’t often equate it with pine trees, ski slopes, snow and cabins – but this is exactly what one discovers in Flagstaff. It is no wonder so many people are moving to Flagstaff and buying homes, if not second homes to escape the heat of Phoenix.
But Flagstaff isn’t just a place to retire. In an economic report for 2013, Flagstaff was named the second top city in Arizona for Arizona job growth.
Flagstaff not only is home to Northern Arizona University but also large science-related industries such as W.L. Gore, Machine Solutions Inc. Prent Thermoforming, Translational Genomics Research Institute, Senes Tech Inc and Southwest Windpower. People also love Flagstaff for the variety of activities and culture – shopping, book festivals, Hopi and Navajo Festivals of Arts and Crafts, Beer Festivals and more.
The population in Flagstaff of 67,468 has steadily been growing with the last census report of 2010 at a rate of 24.5%. The median income for a household in the city was $37,146 and for a family was $48,427.
Flagstaff’s surrounding area is also rich with history. Just 37 miles outside of Flagstaff is the Wupatki National Monument. Wupatki represents a cultural crossroads, home to numerous groups of people over thousands of years. This pueblo was one of the richest and most influential pueblos around less than 800 years ago. Flagstaff is also close to the Grand Canyon and for those who can’t get enough of hiking the canyon, many prefer to make Flagstaff their home.
All of this culture and coolness has not gone unrecognized. In October of this year, The Atlantic published an article titled “A New Type of Growing City – This is where the talent wants to live”. In their list of nine cities, Flagstaff was name one of them.
So what does this mean for the real estate market? This means more people are going to ‘discover’ Flagstaff and be in search of Flagstaff homes for sale. Such people will come from all types of incomes, seeking both luxury homes to mid-priced homes.
